Two Business Faculty Members Receive Inaugural 2010 Howe Teaching Awards

UTSA President Ricardo Romo and Provost John Frederick joined executive administrators at a luncheon Nov. 29 honoring business professors Dr. Cory Hallam and Dr. Lisa Montoya and science professor Dr. Valerie Sponsel with the 2010 Richard S. Howe Outstanding Service to Undergraduates Teaching Award. The award recognizes UTSA tenured, tenure-track and non-tenure track professors with a minimum of three years of teaching experience at UTSA for developing signature learning and experiences for undergraduates outside the traditional classroom environment.

Character to be focus of UTSA College of Business Ethics Symposium Oct. 20

“The Importance of Character in Business” is the theme for the Business Ethics Symposium hosted by The University of Texas at San Antonio College of Business. The symposium will be held Wednesday, Oct. 20 and is free and open to the public. The daylong program will begin at 11 a.m. and conclude at 4:30 p.m. All lectures will be held in the Richard S. Liu Auditorium (2.01.02) in the Business Building on the UTSA Main Campus. The symposium is sponsored by San Antonio Federal Credit Union.

Are estimates of home values at Zillow.com accurate? A research study conducted by University of Texas at San Antonio business faculty members Daniel Hollas, Ron Rutherford and Tom Thomson has found that Zillow’s market value estimates are not any more reliable than owners’ estimates of value.

Lawver Named Director of Advising

April Lawver has been named Director of Advising in the College of Business. Lawver has worked in higher education for the past 10 years. Since 2006, she has served as an academic advisor in the college’s Undergraduate Advising Center.
Lawver’s new duties include managing the daily operations of the college’s Undergraduate Advising Center, supervising staff, overseeing budgets and advising students. Undergraduate Advising, one component of the college’s Center for Student Professional Development, comprises 16 advisors and 2 administrative staff located at both the Main and Downtown campuses.

UTSA Business Students Attend Harvard Financial Conference

Fifteen finance undergraduates from the UTSA College of Business Investment Society recently attended the Harvard Finance Conference in Boston. The conference addressed topics including mergers and acquisitions, capital markets, corporate finance, private equity and careers in finance. Keynote speakers included the president of Barclays and the founder and chairman of Evercore Partners.
