The Center for Education and Research in Information and Infrastructure Security (CERI²S) conducts high impact research in cyber security and educates the cyber security workforce needed now and in the future. The center's research objective is to offer leading edge solutions that will help to solve cyber security problems of national scope and importance.
As one of the leading institutions in the field of infrastructure assurance education and research, the UTSA College of Business is charged with becoming a knowledge resource in cyber security, a training ground for needed security professionals and a contributor to the protection of the national information infrastructure.
One of but a few security programs anchored in a College of Business, the college offers a BBA degree in cyber security as well as various undergraduate minors in this field, a Master of Science in Information Technology degree with a concentration in cyber security and a Ph.D. in information technology.
UTSA's cyber security program has been ranked the best in the nation, according to a national survey of certified information technology security professionals. The Ponemon Institute conducted the survey for Hewlett-Packard.
Hewlett-Packard’s ranking was derived from a survey that asked 2,000 certified IT professionals to rank the top five strongest colleges and universities in security from a list of 403 educational institutions. Respondents rated each school’s program according to their perceptions of the school’s academic rigor, faculty quality, professional reputation and other qualifications.
In 2009, the National Security Agency designated UTSA as a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Research based on the research of business, computer science and engineering faculty. This designation has been awarded to only 47 institutions nationwide. UTSA has also been designated a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance/Cyber Defense Education based on the curriculum in the College of Business.
In 2014, DHS and NSA recertified UTSA in both cyber security education and research, under new more stringent standards. At that time, UTSA also become the first program in the nation to host a certified focus area in digital forensics.
