College of BusinessMBA (Master of Business Administration)
The College of Business is accredited by AACSB International--The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is specifically designed to provide an intensive business education. Qualified candidates with an undergraduate degree in a business or non-business area are welcome to apply.

The majority of UTSA’s MBA (and other graduate students in the College of Business) are employed full-time while pursuing their graduate degrees. Therefore, our classes are offered in an evening format. Also, when school is in session, our Advising Office is open Monday through Thursday until 7:00 p.m. to meet the needs of our current and prospective students. We are located in the Business Building, Room 4.01.18. Please contact the Graduate Advising Office to make an appointment for advising.

In addition to professional advisors, a Graduate Business Career Officer is available to assist with career planning, development, networking, etc.


Application Process

Prospective candidates may apply for the fall, spring, or summer semesters. Application can be made as early as nine months in advance. The graduate application form is available online. A non-refundable application fee and all required supporting documents must be on file with the University’s Graduate School by the appropriate deadline.

Program Admission Requirements.

For admission to the MBA program, applicants must meet University-wide graduate admission requirements. Applicants are further considered on the basis of demonstrated potential for success in graduate study in business administration as indicated by a combination of prior academic achievement, Graduate Management Admission Test scores, personal statement, resume (optional), and references (optional).

The MBA Program Committee evaluates each applicant individually based on the complete package of submitted materials.

A complete application package must include:
    1. A complete application form
    2. Transcripts from all universities attended
    3. Official Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) scores
    4. Personal Statement
    5. Current résumé with emplyment or other experience (optional)
    6. Letters of reference (optional)

MBA Core
The following graduate-level courses constitute the MBA core and are required for students who do not have credit for equivalent undergraduate courses. They also MAY be required for students who have completed their undergraduate business degrees more than seven years before entering the MBA program. Procedures for requesting a waiver may be obtained from the Graduate Advising Office.

No credit for these courses may count toward MBA degree requirements. For students who have completed a business degree from a non-U.S. school, at a minimum BLW 5003 and MGT 5003 are required (so that international students earning an MBA will be familiar with U.S. laws and management practices).

*Please note that MS 5003 has specific prerequisites. They are MAT 1033--Algebra with Calculus for Business and MS 1013--Quantitative Methods. Please see Graduate Advisors for possibility of waiving these prerequisites.

MBA Degree Requirements
The M.B.A. program requires 36 semester credit hours of work beyond any hours acquired in the M.B.A. leveling courses.

Candidates for the M.B.A. degree are required to successfully complete the M.B.A. Core courses, which are included in the following 24 semester credit hours: :
ACC 5023 Accounting Analysis for Decision Making
ECO 5023 Managerial Economics
FIN 5023 Financial Management
MGT 5043 Management and Behavior in Organizations
MGT 5253 Ethics and Globalization
MGT 5903 Strategic Management and Policy
(Students who earn a grade of “B” or better in this course will satisfy the comprehensive examination requirement. A student who receives a grade of “C” may still satisfy the requirement by successfully passing a comprehensive examination as set out in this catalog.)
MKT 5023 Management Marketing
MS 5023 Decision Analysis and Production Management
Students seeking the MBA degree may elect one of the three options to complete the required 36 hours.

Option One
General MBA, Nonthesis Option.

Students must complete 12 hours of general approved electives from the College of Business.

Option Two
General MBA, Thesis Option.

Students are required to complete 6 hours of electives and 6 hours of their master’s thesis.

Option Three
Nonthesis MBA, Concentration Option.

Students are afforded the opportunity to concentrate in a particular area of business. Areas of concentration are: Accounting, Business Economics, Business of Health, Finance, Information Assurance, Information Systems, Management of Technology, Management Science, Marketing Management, Project Management, Real Estate Finance, and Tourism Destination Development.
